We Oppose All Rock And Roll

from 1978 NOW by Vic Godard

/

about

Lost in a flooded basement studio or buried in Bernard Rhodes’ loft? The Sect’s original 1978 album tapes are now obsolete: a replica of punk’s Holy Grail has been fashioned by Vic Godard and a line-up including drummer Mark Laff and original bassist Paul Myers.

Some of the material was re-worked in a jaunty skiffle style on 1980’s What’s The Matter Boy?, but studio versions of other songs have never been released, making this essential and repeated plays draw you in. The lyrics are its beating heart and the reason Godard is held in such high regard; only Devoto’s playful pretentiousness and Wire’s oblique strategies come close. Despite being a partial re-write of Blank Generation, Derail Your Senses is quite possibly the greatest lost punk song never released as a glorious 45; the uncharacteristically straight-forward ‘message’ in Eastern Europeans (why are we afraid of them, when the land to the west “peddling fizzy drink” is more scary?) is perhaps more relevant now than before. Almost the lost masterpiece it could have been, file alongside Pink Flag, The Scream, and Buzzcocks’ Time’s Up, and you have what could have been the future of music and the thinking punk’s canon.
