about

I was asked to write a song for the Nightingales by Robert Lloyd, who phoned me several years ago. I first came up with a rocky riff and overlaid vocals in the character of Robert’s manager (if he could afford one). Later on I went on to finish the song by singing it over a bossa nova- style beat I found on my Yamaha keyboard. This was the version I sent to Robert and a couple of years later he invited me to Leamington Spa to record the track for a single. He’d ditched the latin rhythm in favour of a rock beat that suited the group to a tee. I was annoyed at first as I thought an augmented chord would be necessary to introduce the chorus but Rob said I should save that chord for my own version at a later date. The thing I liked best was what Robert did to the lyrics; he’d amended one verse and reversed scenarios so that he became my exasperated manager (if I could afford one !)

So we had a great two days in Woodbine Street Recording Studio, Leamington, recording three tracks for the single. I told Rob I’d do the latin thing when it came round to doing my own version and so it proved. Johnny and the group were already versed in the style from our Club Left days so they got it immediately and John contributes the blistering solo. The luckiest thing of all was the unexpected arrival of D.C. Collard at the studio on the day we recorded it. Dave was our original pianist back in ’81-’82,and he’d only planned to pop in and say hello as he’d come from Ohio to stay with his sister in East London. I knew Dave would do the job first take so I persuaded him to stay long enough to record this and three others for the new Subway Sect album, Moments Like These.
