David Rankin Grew up with the Subway sect Had the joy of ripping open Nobodys Scared after it dropped through my letter box. Following him all the way. One of those original voices that never let you go while the great songs keep coming Favorite track: I'll find out over time.

Tim Mee How does he do it?
The man just gets better & better. A very strong album of crisply recorded ditties that you just want to keep coming back to. ‘Autumn Rendez-vous’ sung in French and co-starring Helen McCookerybook is a little stunner.
A top treat on side 2 is the voice of Jock Scot (RIP) with a reworking of that man’s ‘Under the Volcano’.
All this and ‘In this town’, Vic’s Velvet Underground tribute.
Sublime stuff.

  • Mums' Revenge
    Record/Vinyl + Digital Album

I started recording mums' revenge in summer 2016. Dave Morgan (The Rockingbirds, ATV, The Weather Prophets) had just joined the Subway Sect as our latest drummer and had a studio in his front room in St Albans. Over the next two and a half years we gradually did more and more tracks until we had more than enough for a record. I played all the instruments while Dave did the drums, percussion and recording. I was happy with my bass lines but not my bass playing which was all attack and no finesse. Luckily Ruth Tidmarsh was on hand and is a superb bassist and fine singer. Dave had already alerted me to her skills as a photographer but as a three piece Sect we were all in the same zone musically, which is a must when you have a tight budget. So Ruth played my bass lines but in a more musicianly way (ie. no horrid buzzy noises). It was an altogether happier experience than most recording set-ups. No outside interference meant we could do just as we wished and we had lots of voices other than mine in the final mix - which we had hoped for from the outset. We were helped out by Helen McCookerybook, Simon Rivers and Neil Palmer from the Bitter Springs/Oldfield Youth Club, Davy Henderson, Jock Scot and Gareth Sager, and Subo from Asbo Derek.

The intro is spoken by a friend of mine called Neil Palmer - he's a drummer who writes a bit of poetry as a result of doing a gig in Manchester with me, The Bitter Springs and Jock Scot about 15 years ago. Jock inspired him to get a slim volume of his own poetry printed up. We did a live reading/music session for Resonance - Johny Brown's Bad Punk show. Neil recited the words over my single, Can’t take the sunshine away and I asked if he could repeat the trick for my LP.

Gnu ambition is a recording that started as a rehearsal that was taped in my living room a year ago with The Bitter Springs as my backing group. Extra vocals and guitars and piano were added later on. The vocals on Bukaki were taken from the original version by Asbo Derek (It’s on their Power Mincer EP released on GNU inc.) Brian Blaney (Subo) is the Glaswegian drummer of the group He claims he's been corrupted by living in Brighton for 30 years. He does the odd (very odd !) vocal live performance in their live set with their singer Jem Price taking over on drums. Their original backing track has been set aside to make way for a dancehall rhythm by Joe Mckechnie (drummer with The Passage and Benny Profane), but Brian's vocal has been used without alteration. Similarly, the track Under the volcano is a collage of snippets from Gareth Sager/Jock Scot's CD of that name. The music is Please Explode - a Sexual Objects instrumental I asked Davy Henderson to send me. Uncannily they were already in the same tempo and you can clearly hear Gareth's acoustic twanging louder than the group-which would've been unlikely at a gig. mums’ revenge (please note the placement of the apostrophe – it is the revenge of all mums everywhere)
